In 1886 a committee of the rural Bethany Baptist Church reported to its congregation that it was 'believed to be the duty of the church to build a Baptist church in Chipley." Just over a year later a wooden building was completed, and on May 28, 1887 the new church building, "a good neat house, finished off nicely, and all paid for", was dedicated. Just over ten years later, however, that building was destroyed in April 1908, along with many other structures in Chipley, by a cyclone. On April 23, 1910, a new brick building was dedicated.
The church building at the corner of Harris and McDougald streets was a prominent feature in the town of Chipley (renamed Pine Mountain in 1958), and remains so today. However, this stately structure is not our church. The church, as the children's rhyme about the church and its steeple and open the door "and there are the people," illustrates that the church is its people.
From 1887 until the present there have been thirty pastors. Additionally, during much of the later years, the church has had on staff a youth leader and a minister of music. Regarding the music program, the church has been blessed with choir members who lead in worship, and with accomplished pianists and organists. Of late guitars and even tambourines enhance the music selections. Annually a candle light Christmas Eve service is held for the entire community. Many families have fond memories of singing Christmas carols and reading bible passages every year as we remember the birth of our Lord and Savior.

Just as the church building stands out in Pine Mountain so does the presence of the church body, its members and its influence and service. For years, a Fall Festival was presented to the community There was food, hot dogs or turnip greens and cornbread, a live blue grass band, games and goodies, a hayride, all presented with a welcoming Christian spirit. In the summer VBS attendees were not only FBC children but boys and girls from the entire community. The fellowship hall is the focus of many church activities, but has been used by community groups as well. For many years a ladies Bible study has met on Wednesday mornings, with women from all over the surrounding area participating. Addiction recovery groups, particularly AA and NA, have also used the hall for their regular evening meetings.
In recent years the church has reached out to three special groups which have been in Pine Mountain temporarily. In the mid 70's Southern Baptist missionary families came to live in Pine Mountain for training before they began their service on the mission field. Many then attended worship with the church for their stay here, and twice the director of the training program served as interim pastor of the church. These servants blessed the church and the church in turn was blessed.
Another Callaway group which was special to the church was the FSU Flying High Circus. These students came for about forty summers to conduct recreational activities for children of Callaway guests and to present circus performances throughout the week. In the 90's FBC welcomed the students with a "get-acquainted" meal each summer, and individual families "adopted " students for the summer, providing them with a local connection. Many of the students regularly worshiped with their church families on Sundays.
More recently, another group of students has resided in Pine Mountain, these for a nine month stay at IMPACT 360, a gap year program established to equip young adults to become Christ centered servant leaders. Many of these students attend worship at FBC and have found a temporary church home here.
FBC has stood at its corner well into its second century, but also has followed the lead of its mother church, Bethany Baptist, in branching out. FBC led the way for the establishment of New Life Baptist Church just outside Pine Mountain. Hunter Road Baptist Church in the southern part of Harris County was also birthed by FBC. Both are alive, growing churches, and a part of the long and far-reaching legacy of our church.
